On the Eve of War, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlaine anounced the formation of a special force of "Home Defence Volunteers", to create a second line of defence, against invasion, in order to "make assurrance doubly sure".  This force was made up of every possible sort of volunteer, very young men to young to yet enlist in the Ary, Older men retired too old for Army service at the front, and people came from all walks of Life. Shop keepers, bank managers, Local Lords and Horse Stable masters, School taeachers, the list was as endless as the variety of people found in the "Home Guard".  
 
Defence Ministry requirement issued a order of procurement to create affordable, ingenious, localy invented weapons to help free up precious weapons and equipment for the enemy front line defences. 
 
The Government order resulted in a variety of strange, unusual yet very effective "Home Guard" weapons.
 
The Smyth Gun represented in this Metal kit was one of a great many hastily designed and improvised Civil Defence volunteer weapons. But for all its simplicity, they were "crudely effective".
