This three-figure set depicts the final moments before the gladiators went into battle in the Arena Games. Before the crowd, in front of the stand where the Emperor was sitting, they would say the words "We who are about to die Salute you". Those unlucky enough to find themselves alive but defeated could hope for the "Thumbs Up"  and Clemency (Life) signal from the Roman Caesar. But if Caesar's inclement Thumb went down, you would not be spared....
